1) In order to play online brdige, I have to de-activate my firewall. Is there another way to keep my firewall active and still be able to play?
2) My brand-new Norton SystemWorks CD won't start. Any advice on how I could get it loading?

Non-professional advice, but based on a shocking amount of online gaming: 1. Depending on where you're playing (MS Gaming Zone, GameSpy, Yahoo or whatever), and what game you're playing, you may be able to keep a certain amount of firewall protection. First look on the site help: they may tell you to open certain ports on the firewall. If there's nothing there, try turning down the security levels in the firewall, or specifically allowing access to the gaming site. Some sites won't allow you to use any firewall that effectively hides your real IP - this also rules out playing via a LAN. Sometimes, you can join but not host games. More modern games and game sites are trying to be more firewall-friendly, and the results are .... patchy. So fiddle with it, and good luck. Usually, I end up using a naked dial-up commection for online games. 2. What happens exactly? Does it just spin and spin? (Clean it.) Does the splash screen come up? If not, does it come up for other cds? Does it just refuse to install? Have you turned off everything else by Symantec/Norton? What Windows version are you using? |

Thanks for your advice.
The problem with the CD is resolved. It seems that a) the CD itself was a little too thin to be read, and b) the sensitivity of the reader was too low, so the expert I took it to installed a DVD reader and everything now works perfectly. Norton offered a SystemWorks plus Firewall package and overlooked certain tolerances. |
