I have only been here for 3 months and am currently unemployed. I am natively English. I am interested in teaching English here but I am so confused about what qualifications you actually need, as there are so many. I need to know exactly what teaching course you need JUST for Germany alone, as I was told that the certificates you need may vary from country to country. At the moment, all I have is a English Language and Lit BA Honours degree (which I did at a uni in UK) and a 20 hour TEFL weekend course certificate. I'm so unsure about what I need to do next. I have no teaching experience whatsoever, so I'm just getting started career-wise. I am living in the South of Germany, about 30 km from Freiburg. Can anyone answer these questions for me?: 1) Is there a particular TEFL course that is required for Germany? 2) Do you need a certain number of 'hours' worth, e.g. the weekend course I did said it was '20 hours'..... 3) Is there a good TEFL course that offers a work experience placement? 4) Is good German knowledge essential? i.e does anyone else here on this forum speak fluent German? No, you don't need any qualifications to teach English in Germany, but I'd recommend doing the CELTA course. 2) Do you need a certain number of 'hours' worth, e.g. the weekend course I did said it was '20 hours'..... Again, no - you can teach English to anyone if you (and they) think you can teach it. Not to be recommended though. 3) Is there a good TEFL course that offers a work experience placement? The CELTA course normally requires you to teach some lessons in front of real live students. 4) Is good German knowledge essential? i.e does anyone else here on this forum speak fluent German? How much German am I likely to need? Speaking German isn't a must, but I'd recommend trying to pick it up and being able to speak German relatively fluently because if you are planning to stay here for any length of time, you will find it makes life here easier/more enjoyable.
