i have a chronic condition which requires a good plan, and would like to get into the german scheme (i don't want to be on a private plan). how can i get started? is there a website someone can recommend? any advice would be greatly appreciated!

german health system for irish citizen/freelance teacher |

hi, i've been reading the posts on health insurance, but am still confused. i am an irish citizen who will be moving to berlin this summer. i currently
teach english at the university level in france, and hope to do the same in berlin. sounds like it is normal to start out at the freelance level with a few
different schools. but, as i see here, that makes my health insurance situation confusing.

A quick answer, which I expect others (who know a lot more about this than me) will confirm and expand on:
Health insurance: - You probably won't be able to get into the German state scheme ... - so you'll need private insurance, which won't be cheap given a pre-existing condition ... - and it might be better for you to arrange cover in Ireland or the UK (e.g. via BUPA). Pensions: - You may be required to pay into the German state pensions scheme (search for "BfA" in this forum). - Depending on your age and existing arrangements, this could be a very bad deal for you, and you need to factor this into your financial calculations. |

I'm afraid most private health insurance schemes here and elsewhere exclude pre-conditions, so this could be a hassle for you....
I would recommend contacting Mike Woodiwiss about this. Mike is a British insurance broker who can be trusted. He knows the system here and what EFL teachers can and can't afford to pay. Bw, I'm afraid you can't opt for a state health insurance scheme as a freelancer. You have to take out a private health insurance scheme. Hope that helps, but I'm not sure it will. Best wishes John
