You need a program called Acrobat Reader to be able to open a file with a .pdf file extension. Acrobat Reader is commonly used on the Internet and by lots of companies who have to send documentation to other companies. It allows you to read and print out forms such as train timetables, a lot of documents/forms from the German authorities, scientific reports, etc.
We have all got different software, or different versions of the same software but Acrobat Reader allows you to open almost any kind of document without having to worry about which program it was written in.
1. If Acrobat Reader is already installed on your computer you should be able to open any file with a .pdf file extension by double clicking on that file's icon. See what happens.
2. Nothing happened! Right then, you need to get a copy of Acrobat Reader (version 5.0). This software is completely free and only takes a few minutes to download (completely legally) from the Internet. You don't need to worry about viruses, as this program is used by companies and institutions the world over, so if there were anything untoward about the download, one of the more reputable software companies in the world would be in big trouble.
3. Go online and go to the following website:
www.adobe.com/products/acrobat
1) when you get to Adobe's home page, look for "downloads"
2) hold your mouse over "downloads".
3) you should see the option "Free Acrobat Reader", click on that and follow then just follow the instructions (they are all in English)
Simple really!
4. Once the program has been downloaded onto your hard disk, you still have to install it on your PC - find the Acrobat Reader program file that you have just downloaded and run the installation program.
5. Congatulations! You should now be able to view and print out .pdf files.
